Privacy and confidentiality are basically non-existent on social media. It's kind of daunting to think that everything that goes online is on there forever. It's been placed and can never go back, despite, let's say deleting a post. Our privacy concerns are not just limited to what we post but also extend with what the companies are doing with our information. We're finally entering a new period now where people are taking privacy and confidentiality online a lot more seriously, especially after the whole Facebook analytics fiasco a few years ago. It's become more clear to us, the users, of how much information these companies collect from us. The reason why these platforms are free is that the companies themselves sell our data in terms of advertisements.
That being said, governments are finally starting to take a stance on this issue and are coming up with stricter regulations for tech companies to follow. Some of them constantly send their users emails with their updates regarding privacy. It's a front-center when people put any information down. I believe we still have a lot more work to do in this space, but for now, it's up to the individual to check their privacy settings before posting.

Hi Marvin,
ReplyDeleteI agree with what you said about the issues on privacy. These days it is certainly harder to keep information private since everything has been digitalized. We must be wary of all the information we post on the internet. Sometimes i think writing things out may be safer even though it may seem inconvenient.
